Superfoods

Superfoods are a class of foods recognized for their high content of nutritious compounds, antioxidants, and peculiar healthy compounds, compared to all other available foods.

Generally, superfoods derive from plants, mushrooms, algae or bacteria, and very rarely from animals.
Especially in the 20th century, a lot of research funds have been spent on analyzing these foods, testing the effects of their consumption on large groups of patients, and ultimately trying to understand which compounds are actually responsible for the beneficial health effects of super foods.

Typical examples are berries, known for their high antioxidant content, or other fiber-rich foods such as psyllium husks, plant based flavonoids, sterols (which greatly help in lowering cholesterol) and protein-rich foods with very little to no fat content.
